Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 52
Verse 3 of 5

No One Is Too Far Gone to Pray

ਬਹੁਤੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਕੂਕੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
bahutay a-ugan kookai ko-ee.
That person who is filled with all sorts of sins may pray at the Lord's Door,
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋਈ ॥੨॥
jaa tis bhaavai bakhsay so-ee. ||2||
but he is forgiven only when the Lord so wills. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Even someone weighed down with every kind of wrong can stand and pray at the One's door.

They are forgiven when the One chooses to forgive.

No one is too far gone to pray — the door is open even to the worst.
The deeper layer

This one says no one is too far gone to pray.

bahutay a-ugan kookai ko-ee — someone full of many faults can still call out at the One's door. The door is open, even to the one who has done the most wrong.

jaa tis bhaavai bakhsay so-ee — and they are forgiven when the One wishes. Forgiveness is not bought by the prayer. It is given freely.

Think of a child who broke something and comes to say sorry. Saying sorry does not "pay" for the lamp. The parent forgives because they love the child. The open door and the free gift together take away hopelessness.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to believe you are never beyond a fresh start?
