It's Not the World That Drowns Us but the Clinging

In that pool of the world, the people have their homes; there, the Lord has created water and fire.

In the mud of earthly attachment, their feet have become mired, and I have seen them drowning there. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People build their homes in the pool of this world, where the One has set both water and fire side by side.

But their feet sink into the mud of clinging, and I have watched them drowning in it.

It is not the world that drowns us, but the mud of clinging that grabs our feet.
The deeper layer

The world is a pool in which people make their homes — a place the One designed with opposites (water and fire) held together. The danger is not the pool itself but the "mud of earthly attachment" that grips the feet. Nanak speaks as a witness — "I have seen them drowning" — with sorrow, not contempt.

A Question to Sit With

What kinds of "mud" make it hard for people to move freely through life?
