In plain words

There are six great schools of thought. They have six masters and six sets of teachings.

But the Teacher of all teachers is the One, who shows up in countless forms.

Behind all the different schools and teachers stands one Teacher, wearing many forms.
The deeper layer

This one says that behind all the different schools of thought, there is one Teacher.

In Guru Nanak's time, India had six famous schools of thinking about life and truth. Each had its own master and its own teachings. Chhi-a ghar chhi-a gur chhi-a upadays means "six schools, six teachers, six teachings."

Guru Nanak does not pick a winner. He points behind all of them. Gur gur ayko means "the Teacher of teachers is One." Vays anayk means "wearing many outfits."

Think of one sun shining through six different windows. Each window has a different color of glass. The light looks different in every room, but it is the same sun. The schools are many. The Teacher they are all reaching for is One.

A Question to Sit With

When different people teach the same deep truth in different ways, what are they all pointing at?
