Verse 2 of 3

Judge a Path by Whether It Turns Your Heart

ਜੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
jai ghar kartay keerat ho-ay.
That system, where the Praises of the Creator are sung
ਸੋ ਘਰੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੋਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
so ghar raakh vadaa-ee tohi. ||1|| rahaa-o.
- follow that system; in it rests greatness. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Find the path that truly sings the praises of the Maker.

Follow that one. That is where the greatness really lies.

Judge a path not by its arguments but by whether it actually turns your heart toward the One.
The deeper layer

This one gives a simple test for choosing a path: does it turn your heart to praise?

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Jai ghar kartay keerat hoay means "the house where the Creator is praised." So ghar raakh means "hold on to that house." Vadaa-ee tohi means "greatness lies there."

Guru Nanak does not ask which teaching sounds the most clever. He asks what it grows in you. Think of choosing a friend group. The best one is not the coolest. It is the one that makes you kinder and happier. In the same way, judge a path by its fruit. If it fills your heart with thanks and praise for the One, follow it.

A Question to Sit With

How can you tell whether something is genuinely good for you by its fruit?
