Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 58
Verse 4 of 5

The Passions Are Companions; Only the One Stays

ਪੰਚ ਸਖੀ ਹਮ ਏਕੁ ਭਤਾਰੋ ॥
panch sakhee ham ayk bhataaro.
I have five companions and one Spouse.
ਪੇਡਿ ਲਗੀ ਹੈ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਚਾਲਣਹਾਰੋ ॥੩॥
payd lagee hai jee-arhaa chaalanhaaro. ||3||
It is ordained from the very beginning, that the soul must ultimately depart. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have five companions and one Husband.

And it was fixed from the very start: the soul must one day leave.

The passions are temporary travel-companions; only the One stays when the journey ends.
The deeper layer

A stark arithmetic: "five companions and one Spouse." The five passions (and the senses) travel with the soul through life, but only the One is the true partner. And the departure is built in from the beginning — "the soul must ultimately depart." The five are temporary travel-companions; only the One remains when the journey ends.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what travels with you now that may not be with you at the end?
