Let devotional faith be the distilling fire, and your love the ceramic cup. Thus the sweet nectar of life is distilled. ||1||

In plain words

Take wisdom for your molasses, meditation for your fragrant flowers, good deeds for your herbs.

Let devotion be the fire that distills and love be the cup. And so the sweet nectar of real life is brewed.

There is an intoxication you can brew from wisdom, good deeds, and love — and it heals.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak takes the recipe for making wine and turns it into a recipe for the Nectar of the Name.

In his day, people brewed strong drink from molasses, flowers, and herbs, heated over a fire and caught in a cup. Guru Nanak uses the very same steps. Wisdom is the molasses. Meditation is the fragrant flowers. Good deeds are the herbs. Devotion is the fire. Love is the cup.

It ras ami-o chu-aa-ee-ai — this is how the sweet nectar drips out. It is like a kitchen recipe where every ingredient is something good you do or feel. Guru Nanak takes the very craft of making drink and turns it into a recipe for a holy life.

A Question to Sit With

What "lifts you up" in a way that leaves you better, not worse, afterward?
