Both Parting and Homecoming Are in His Hands

ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

All are Yours; all meditate on You.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

He alone, whom You bless with Your Mercy, obtains the jewel of the Naam.

The Gurmukhs obtain it, and the self-willed manmukhs lose it.

You Yourself separate the mortals, and You Yourself unite them. ||1||

In plain words

All belong to You; everyone turns to You in remembrance.

But only the one You bless with mercy finds the jewel of the Name.

Those turned to the Guru find it; the self-willed let it slip — for You Yourself part the mortals, and You Yourself bring them together.

Both the parting and the homecoming are in the One's hands.
The deeper layer

The "jewel of the Naam" is found only by mercy — the Gurmukh receives it, the manmukh lets it slip. And the parting and reuniting are both the One's doing: "You Yourself separate... and You Yourself unite" (cf. Shabad 66, the Guru who reunites the long-separated). Even the meeting is grace's gift, not the seeker's achievement.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever been reunited with someone or something at just the right moment?
