gur poorai naanak har paa-i-aa. ||4||3||55||
Through the Perfect Guru, O Nanak, the Lord is obtained. ||4||3||55||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One Himself moves us to drink the Ambrosial Elixir.

Through the Perfect Guru, says Nanak, the One is found.

Even the thirst that draws you to drink is itself a gift.
The deeper layer

This one says that even the thirst that draws you to the One is a gift.

Amrit har ras means "the One's sweet nectar." Har aap pee-aa-i-aa means "the One gives it to drink." So even the drinking is not our own doing.

Think of a parent who not only sets the water glass on the table, but also reminds you that you are thirsty. The thirst, the cup, and the drink all come as gifts. An earlier shabad says the same: only the one the One helps to drink will drink.

Gur poorai naanak har paa-i-aa means "through the Perfect Guru, the One is found." The Guru is like the pitcher the nectar is poured from.

A Question to Sit With

What good longing in you might actually be a gift, drawing you toward what you need?
