Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 80
Verse 3 of 5

Once It's Your Life, You Can't Live Without It

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
naam binaa nahee jeevi-aa jaa-ay.
Without the Naam, I cannot live.
ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
vadai bhaag gurmukh har paa-ay. ||2||
By great good fortune, the Gurmukhs obtain the Naam. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the Name, I cannot live.

By great good fortune, those turned to the Guru receive the Name.

Once it has truly become your life, you cannot imagine living without it.
The deeper layer

The intensity sharpens: "without the Naam, I cannot live" — the Name as breath itself, as in Shabad 27. This is viraha turned to dependence: the soul that has tasted the Name experiences its absence as a threat to life. And still the Name comes by fortune, to the Gurmukh.

A Question to Sit With

What do you have that you could no longer imagine living without?
