Chant and repeat the Naam; through the Guru's Teachings praise the Lord, and slay the horrible serpent of the Messenger of Death. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Chant the Name in wave after wave of joy.

Chant and repeat it; through the Guru's teaching praise the One, and the dreadful serpent of death is slain.

Joyful praise can slay the serpent of the fear of death.
The deeper layer

The Pause overflows with "endless waves of joy," and gives the Name a power over the last fear: praising the One "slays the horrible serpent of the Messenger of Death." The fear of death, coiled and venomous, is killed not by force but by joy — the soul absorbed in praise has nothing left for death to poison.
