Let Go the Three Pulls and a Fourth Peace Opens

ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥

First, I renounced my egotistical love of myself.

Second, I renounced the ways of the world.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਦੁਰਜਨ ਮੀਤ ਸਮਾਨੇ ॥

Renouncing the three qualities, I look alike upon friend and enemy.

And then, the fourth state of bliss was revealed to me by the Holy One. ||2||

In plain words

First, I let go of my self-centered love of myself.

Second, I let go of the world's usual ways.

Letting go of the three pulls of nature, I see friend and enemy the same — and then the holy One revealed to me the fourth state.

Let go of self-love, the world's ways, and even the three pulls of nature — and a fourth, unshakable peace opens.
The deeper layer

A clear ladder of release: self-love, then worldly ways, then the three qualities themselves. The fruit is equanimity — "friend and enemy alike" — and beyond it, "the fourth state" (chautha pad), the pure awareness beyond all three gunas, revealed by the Holy One.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to treat friend and rival with the very same steadiness?
