Two Doors, Both Opened by Grace

ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਨਹੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰੀ ॥

bin bhagtee nahee satgur paa-ee-ai bin bhaagaa nahee bhagat haree.

Without devotional worship, the True Guru is not obtained. Without good destiny, devotional worship of the Lord is not obtained.

ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਸਤਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੀ ॥੨॥

bin bhaagaa satsang na paa-ee-ai karam milai har naam haree. ||2||

Without good destiny, the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, is not obtained. By the grace of one's good karma, the Lord's Name is received. ||2||

In plain words

Without loving devotion, the True Guru is not found. Without good fortune, devotion to the One is not found.

Without good fortune, the Sangat, the true gathering, is not found. By grace, the Naam of the One is received.

Grace opens one door after another, and each leads you closer to the One.

The deeper layer

Grace opens one door, and that door leads to the next.

The verse is a chain. Devotion leads to the True Guru. Bin bhaagaa nahee bhagat haree: without good fortune, there is no devotion to the One. Good fortune also opens the door to the satsang, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Karam milai har naam haree: through grace, the Naam of the One is received.

The word bhaag means fortune, what comes to you. Karam here means grace, the One's kindness.

Think of a row of automatic doors at an airport. You walk forward, and each one slides open as you come near. Everything here is received, one door leading gently to the next.
