Touching the philosopher's stone, they themselves becomes the philosopher's stone; they become the companions of the Lord, the Guru. ||4||4||12||

In plain words

Those who are given the honor of the One's throne, those who turn toward the Guru, are made the greatest of all.

Touching the magic stone that turns iron into gold, they become that stone themselves. Nanak says: they become close companions of the One, the Guru.

Touched by grace, you become the stone that turns others to gold.
The deeper layer

What you receive, you become able to give.

The verse uses an old picture, the paaras. People told stories of a magic stone that turned iron into gold at a touch. Here the wonder goes further. Paaras bhayt bha-ay say paaras — touching the stone, they become the stone. Now they can turn others to gold too.

The ones given honor, the takhat or seat of the One, are those turned toward the Guru. Naanak har gur sang thee-ay — says Nanak, they become close companions of the One and the Guru.

Think of a candle lighting another candle. The first flame does not get smaller. Now there are two lights, and each can light more.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever been so changed by something good that you started passing it on to others?
