Verse 4 of 5

When Pride Dissolves

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਚੂਕੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
nadar karay chookai abhimaan.
When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, egotism is eradicated.
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
saachee dargeh paavai maan.
Then, the mortal is honored in the Court of the True Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਦ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
har jee-o vaykhai sad hajoor.
He sees the Dear Lord always close at hand, ever-present.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥੩॥
gur kai sabad rahi-aa bharpoor. ||3||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he sees the Lord pervading and permeating all. ||3||

In plain words

When the One looks on you with grace, pride comes to an end.

Then you are given honor in the True Court.

You see the dear One always close at hand, right here.

Through the Guru's Word, you see the One filling everything.

When pride dissolves, you finally see the One who was near and everywhere all along.
The deeper layer

One look of grace ends pride, and then you see the One close by and filling everything.

Nadar karay chookai abhimaan: when the One looks with grace, abhimaan, pride, is gone. Saachee dargeh paavai maan: honor in the True Court. Har jee-o vaykhai sad hajoor: the dear One is seen always present, close at hand. Gur kai sabad rahi-aa bharpoor: through the Guru's Word, the One fills everything, the way sunlight fills a room once the curtains open.

A Question to Sit With

What can you see or notice better once you stop trying to look bigger than everyone?
