Verse 3 of 5

Serve the One Who Never Leaves

ayko sayvhu avar na ko-ay.
So serve the One Lord, and no other.
jit sayvi-ai sadaa sukh ho-ay.
Serving Him, eternal peace is obtained.
naa oh marai na aavai jaa-ay.
He does not die; He does not come and go in reincarnation.
tis bin avar sayvee ki-o maa-ay. ||2||
Why should I serve any other than Him, O my mother? ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

So serve the One, and no other.

Serving the One, you find peace that lasts forever.

The One does not die, and does not come and go.

Why should I serve anyone else, O my mother?

Give your heart to what never leaves.
The deeper layer

Serve the One who never dies, and your peace lasts.

Maa-ay, O my mother, is a tender family voice common in these shabads. Naa oh marai na aavai jaa-ay — the One neither dies nor comes-and-goes, unlike everything perishable.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life have you learned you can always count on?
