The One Who Cannot Be Fooled

ਆਪਿ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
aap abhul sachaa sach so-ay.
He cannot be fooled; He is the Truest of the True.
ਹੋਰਿ ਸਭਿ ਭੂਲਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥
hor sabh bhooleh doojai pat kho-ay.
All others are deluded; in duality, they lose their honor.
ਸਾਚਾ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
saachaa sayvhu saachee banee.
So serve the True Lord, through the True Bani of His Word.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੪॥੯॥
naanak naamay saach samaanee. ||4||9||
O Nanak, through the Naam, merge in the True Lord. ||4||9||

In plain words

The One can never be fooled; the One is the Truest of the True.

Everyone else is fooled, and chasing a second thing apart from the One, they lose their honor.

So serve the True One through the true Word.

Nanak says: through the Naam, melt into the True One.

Stay with what is real; the fake always fades.
The deeper layer

The One can never be fooled, so stay close to what is true.

Aap abhul — the One never makes a mistake and cannot be tricked. The One is the Truest of the True.

Hor sabh bhooleh doojai pat kho-ay — everyone else gets confused and loses their honor in doojai. Doojaa means "second" — thinking there is something apart from the One worth chasing. Think of following a fake map on your phone. You end up lost, far from where you meant to go.

The way back is saachee banee — the true Word, the Guru's songs. Through the Naam, the Name, you melt back into the True One.

A Question to Sit With

When has chasing something fake left you feeling emptier?
