ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur kai sabad naam neesaan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is blessed with the insignia and the banner of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one who accepts the Hukam, the flow of life, is welcomed and accepted.

Through the Guru's Word, they are given the badge and the banner of the Naam.

Move with the flow of life, and you are welcome as you are.
The deeper layer

Accept the flow of life, and you are welcomed; the Guru's Word gives you the Naam like a banner to carry.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Hukam mannay: accepting the Hukam, the flow of existence. Mannay is more than agreeing; it means living in tune with it. Parvaan: accepted, welcomed. Naam neesaan: the badge and banner of the Naam.

Think of a team jersey you are proud to wear. The Naam is a banner like that: it shows where you belong.

A Question to Sit With

When has fighting how things are only made it harder?
