Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 22
Verse 3 of 5

Written in Before You Began

saach ratay jinHaa Dhur likh paa-i-aa.
Those who have such pre-ordained destiny are imbued with the Naam.
har kaa naam sadaa man bhaa-i-aa.
The Name of the Lord is forever pleasing to their minds.
satgur kee banee sadaa sukh ho-ay.
Through the Bani, the Word of the True Guru, eternal peace is found.
jotee jot milaa-ay so-ay. ||2||
Through it, one's light merges into the Light. ||2||

In plain words

Those who have it written for them from the very start are soaked in the Naam.

The Naam of the One always feels sweet to their minds.

Through the Bani, the True Guru's Word, they find lasting peace.

Through it, their little light merges into the great Light.

A small light finding the great Light — that is coming home.
The deeper layer

Some hearts love the Naam, and through the Guru's Word their small light melts into the great Light.

Dhur likh paa-i-aa: written from the start, a gift given before they began. Man bhaa-i-aa: pleasing to the mind. Jotee jot milaa-ay: light merging into Light, the spark rejoining its source, one of the central pictures of union across Gurbani.

Think of a single candle flame held up in bright sunlight. Its light and the sun's light become one light.

A Question to Sit With

What is a song of goodness that you never get tired of?
