Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 23
Verse 3 of 5

Bringing the Mind Back Home

ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
baho bhaykh karahi man saaNt na ho-ay.
They wear all sorts of religious robes, but their minds are not at peace.
ਬਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਿ ਅਪਣੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥
baho abhimaan apnee pat kho-ay.
In great egotism, they lose their honor.
ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥
say vadbhaagee jin sabad pachhaani-aa.
But those who realize the Word of the Shabad, are blessed by great good fortune.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਦਾ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
baahar jaadaa ghar meh aani-aa. ||2||
They bring their distractible minds back home. ||2||

In plain words

People put on all kinds of holy clothes, and still their minds find no peace.

Full of pride, they lose their honor.

Lucky are those who come to know the Word.

They bring their wandering minds back home.

A costume cannot calm a restless heart.
The deeper layer

Holy clothes cannot calm a mind; knowing the Word brings the wandering mind home.

Baho bhaykh karahi: wearing many kinds of religious robes. Man saa(n)t na ho-ay: the mind finds no peace. Abhimaan: pride. Sabad pachhaaniaa: coming to know the Word. Baahar jaadaa ghar meh aaniaa: the mind that runs outside is brought back home.

The robes stand for any outward show, in any tradition, including our own. Think of a puppy that keeps running out of the yard. You call it gently, and it comes home.

A Question to Sit With

What settles you down when your mind is running everywhere?
