Verse 4 of 5

The Treasure Already Inside

ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
ghar meh vasat agam apaaraa.
Within the home of the inner self is the inaccessible and infinite substance.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਜਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
gurmat khojeh sabad beechaaraa.
Those who find it, by following the Guru's Teachings, contemplate the Shabad.
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
naam nav niDh paa-ee ghar hee maahi.
Those who obtain the nine treasures of the Naam within the home of their own inner being,
ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੩॥
sadaa rang raatay sach samaahi. ||3||
are forever dyed in the color of the Lord's Love; they are absorbed in the Truth. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Inside the home of your own self is a treasure, beyond reach and without end.

Those who follow the Guru's teaching find it, thinking over the Word.

They find the nine treasures of the Naam right inside their own home.

They stay dyed forever in the color of love, and they melt into the Truth.

The treasure you are hunting for is already inside you.
The deeper layer

The treasure is already inside you, in the home of your own heart.

Ghar meh vasat: the treasure is in the home. Agam apaaraa: beyond reach, without end. Gurmat khojeh: searching by the Guru's teaching. Nav nidh: the nine treasures, every kind of wealth, found ghar hee maahi, right inside. Sadaa rang raatay: dyed forever in love's color.

Guru Amar Das often turns the search inward like this. Think of hunting all over the house for your glasses while they sit on your head.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing might already be inside you, waiting to be noticed?
