Verse 5 of 5

It All Comes From the One

ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
kahat naanak ha-umai kahai na ko-ay.
Says Nanak, no one can describe the Lord by speaking through ego.
ਆਖਣੁ ਵੇਖਣੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪॥
aakhan vaykhan sabh saahib tay ho-ay. ||4||2||14||
All speech and insight comes from our Lord and Master. ||4||2||14||

In plain words

Nanak says: no one can describe the One by speaking from ego.

All our speaking and all our seeing come from the Great One.

Even our words to praise the One are gifts from the One.
The deeper layer

Even our words about the One are gifts from the One. Ha-umai kahai na ko-ay — no one can describe the One while puffed up with ego. Ha-umai means ego, the loud "me, me" feeling inside. The verse carries the name Nanak, and it makes a gentle turn. Aakhan vaykhan sabh saahib tay ho-ay — all our speaking and seeing come from the Master.

It is like a child making a birthday card for a parent, with crayons the parent bought. Even the gift is made from what we were given. The songs of Raag Bhairao carry this same idea about words as a gift.

A Question to Sit With

How do you try to describe something too big for words?
