Verse 2 of 5

A Heart That Has Not Bloomed Yet

ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਬਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਸੋਇ ॥
is man ka-o basant kee lagai na so-ay.
This mind is not even touched by spring.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜਲਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਦੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ih man jali-aa doojai do-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
This mind is burnt by duality and double-mindedness. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This mind does not feel even a breath of spring.

This mind is scorched, split in two by duality.

A heart that feels split cannot feel the spring — until it comes back together.
The deeper layer

A mind split in two cannot feel the spring, even when it is all around.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Basant kee lagai na so-ay: not even a hint of spring reaches it. Jali-aa: burned, scorched. Doojai do-ay: duality, being pulled two ways, cut off from the oneness. This is the ache of haumai, the feeling of being a separate self, and the rest of the shabad moves toward its healing.

Think of a sunny day when you are upset about something. The sun is shining, and you cannot feel it.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel whole again when you feel pulled in two directions?
