Going in Circles

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੁਏ ॥
manmukh fir fir ha-umai mu-ay.
The self-willed manmukhs die of their egotism, over and over again.
ਕਾਲਿ ਦੈਤਿ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਗਏ ॥੨॥
kaal dait sanghaaray jam pur ga-ay. ||2||
They are destroyed by Death's demons, and they must go to the City of Death. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Those who follow only their own wanting are ruined by ego, over and over again.

Death strikes them down, and they are taken off to the city of death.

Living only for me walks you in circles.
The deeper layer

A life that only serves the puffed-up "me" falls into the same trap again and again.

A manmukh is someone who faces only themselves, turned away from the Guru. Manmukh fir fir ha-umai mu-ay means again and again, they are ruined by ego.

Kaal dait sanghaaray jam pur ga-ay: the demons of death strike them down, and they go to the city of death. It is a picture of a life spent going around in circles, like a hamster running on a wheel. It runs and runs and never gets anywhere, and then the time is over.

A Question to Sit With

What is a habit that feels like going in circles for you?
