God the Destroyer of all depression and suffering is found, through the Guru's Teachings, singing the Glorious Praises of God. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

O my mind, keep the One, Har, Har, in your thoughts always.

Sing the praises of the One through the Guru's teaching, and you find the One who breaks up all heaviness and sorrow.

Singing the One's praises is where heaviness melts.
The deeper layer

Keep the One in mind and sing, and the heaviness lifts.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Har har chayt sadaa man mayray means my mind, remember the One always.

Sabh aalas dookh bhanj means the One breaks away all dullness and sorrow. Aalas is that heavy, sleepy, can't-be-bothered feeling. Dookh is sadness.

How do we meet the One? Gurmat gaavhu gun means through the Guru's teaching, sing the One's goodness. Singing, called kirtan, is like medicine for a heavy heart. Think of how a favorite song can lift you on a gray, rainy day.

A Question to Sit With

What lifts your spirits when you are feeling weighed down?
