A Bath That Cleans the Inside

ਜਿਸੁ ਜੀਉ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
jis jee-o antar mailaa ho-ay.
If someone's soul is polluted within,
ਤੀਰਥ ਭਵੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਲੋਇ ॥

what is the use of his traveling to sacred shrines of pilgrimage all over the world?
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗ ॥
naanak milee-ai satgur sang.
O Nanak, when one joins the Society of the True Guru,
ਤਉ ਭਵਜਲ ਕੇ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਬੰਧ ॥੫॥੪॥

then the bonds of the terrifying world-ocean are broken. ||5||4||

In plain words

If someone's heart is dirty inside,

what use is it to travel to holy places all over the world?

Nanak says: when you join the company of the True Guru,

the ropes that tie you to the frightening ocean of the world snap.

No amount of travel cleans the inside; the company of the True Guru does.
The deeper layer

The ending answers the opening. A stain on the inside does not wash off by traveling to holy places.

jis jee-o antar mailaa ho-ay — if someone's heart is dirty inside, what good is traveling to shrines all over the world? It is like taking a muddy shirt on a long trip. It comes back just as muddy.

What frees us is satgur sang, the company of the True Guru. That company changes you from the inside, the way a good friend makes you kinder just by being near. Then bhavjal kay tootas banDh — the ropes that tie us to the rough ocean of the world snap.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone whose company makes you a kinder person?
