Verse 3 of 5

Held by the Hem

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਗੋੁਪਾਲ ॥
kar kirpaa pargatay gopaal.
In His Mercy, the Lord of the World has revealed Himself to me.
ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੨॥
larh laa-ay uDhaaray deen da-i-aal. ||2||
The Lord, Merciful to the meek, has attached me to the hem of His robe and saved me. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In kindness, the Lord of the World has shown Himself to me.

Kind to the humble, He has held me to the hem of His robe and saved me.

You can hold on to something good the way a child grips a parent's sleeve.
The deeper layer

The One who cares for the whole world shows Himself in kindness and holds the humble close.

Kar kirpaa pargatay gopaal: in kindness, Gopaal, the Lord of the World, has appeared. Gopaal first meant one who looks after cows, a keeper who cares for every one of the herd.

Larh laa-ay uDhaaray deen da-i-aal: the One, deen da-i-aal, kind to the humble, has attached me to the larh, the hem of His robe, and saved me. Picture a small child in a busy market holding tight to a parent's sleeve. As long as the child holds on, the child is safe.

A Question to Sit With

What do you reach for and hold onto when you feel small?
