Verse 4 of 5

Steady as a Deep-Rooted Tree

ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਪੇ ਨਾਉ ॥
jo jan tayraa japay naa-o.
That humble being who chants Your Name,
ਸਭਿ ਫਲ ਪਾਏ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੩॥
sabh fal paa-ay nihchal gun gaa-o. ||3||
obtains all fruits and rewards; singing the Glories of God, he becomes steady and stable. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The person who repeats Your Name, O One, receives every good fruit.

Singing Your goodness, they become steady and unshakable.

Keeping something good in mind helps you grow steady and unshakable.
The deeper layer

Keep the One's Name, and every good fruit comes, and you grow steady.

Jo jan tayraa japay naa-o: the person who repeats Your Name. Sabh fal paa-ay: receives all the fruits. In a spring raag, it is a picture of a tree heavy with ripe fruit.

Nihchal gun gaa-o: singing the One's goodness, a person becomes nihchal, steady, not shaken. Think of a tree with deep roots. The wind can bend the branches, but the tree stays standing.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady when things around you are shaking?
