Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Now the dark age, Kali Yuga, has come.
Plant the Naam of the One. Plant it!
This is not the season for other seeds, not at all.
Don't wander off, lost in doubt and confusion.
The one whose forehead carries this blessing meets the Guru and finds the One.
O mind, this is the season of the Naam.
Nanak says: I sing the goodness of the One — Har, Haray, Har, Haray.
Now is the season to plant the Naam, the way every farmer knows the right season for planting.
Ab kaloo aa-i-o ray: now the age of Kali Yuga has come. In old Indian thinking, it is the hardest of four great ages, when people forget easily. Ik naam bovhu bovhu — plant the one Naam, plant it. Other seeds will not grow in this season. So the verse asks us not to wander around lost and unsure.
Think of a school garden in spring. If you wait until winter to plant, nothing comes up. Jis mastak hai laykhaa: some people have it written on their forehead, an old way of saying it is their blessing. They meet the Guru, and through the Guru they find the One. Man rut naam ray — O mind, this is the season of the Naam. Nanak ends by singing praise: har haray har haray.
What is one good seed you could plant in yourself right now?
