Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 6
Verse 3 of 5

In Every Single Heart

ਮਨਮੁਖੀ ਦੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਭੇਉ ॥
manmukhee duhaagan naahi bhay-o.
The self-willed manmukhs, suffering in separation, do not understand this mystery.
ਓਹੁ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਾਵੈ ਸਰਬ ਪ੍ਰੇਉ ॥
oh ghat ghat raavai sarab paray-o.
The Beloved Lord of all celebrates in each and every heart.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਥਿਰੁ ਚੀਨੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੇਉ ॥
gurmukh thir cheenai sang day-o.
The Gurmukh is stable, knowing that God is always with him.
ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਜਪੁ ਜਪੇਉ ॥੨॥
gur naam drirh-aa-i-aa jap japay-o. ||2||
The Guru has implanted the Naam within me; I chant it, and meditate on it. ||2||

In plain words

Those who follow only their own minds feel far away, like a bride parted from her Beloved, and they do not understand this secret.

The Beloved of all delights in each and every heart.

The one who turns to the Guru stays steady, knowing the One is always near.

The Guru has planted the Naam firmly in me. I repeat it and keep it in mind.

The Beloved is dancing inside every single heart, even when someone feels alone.
The deeper layer

The One lives in every heart, even when someone feels alone.

A manmukh is someone turned toward their own wants. Such a person feels far away, like a bride missing her husband. The verse draws them gently, as lonely, not as bad.

Here is the secret they miss. Oh ghat ghat raavai sarab paray-o — the Beloved of all delights in each and every heart. The gurmukh, the one turned toward the Guru, is thir, steady, knowing the One is always close.

Think of WiFi in a house. It fills every room, whether or not your phone has found it yet. The Guru planted the Naam inside. Saying it again and again, jap, is how you hold and love what was planted.

A Question to Sit With

How might it change your day to remember that everyone carries the same One inside?
