Verse 3 of 9

Both the Wealth and Its Keeper

ਆਪੇ ਕਵਲਾ ਕੰਤੁ ਆਪਿ ॥
aapay kavlaa kant aap.
He Himself is Lakshmi, and He Himself is her husband.
ਆਪੇ ਰਾਵੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਥਾਪਿ ॥੨॥
aapay raavay sabad thaap. ||2||
He established the world by Word of His Shabad, and He Himself ravishes it. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is Lakshmi, good fortune herself, and the One is her husband too.

The One set up the world by the Word, and the One delights in it.

The One is both the good fortune and the one who holds it.
The deeper layer

The One is both the good fortune and the one who holds it, and delights in the world set up by the Word.

Aape kavlaa kant aap — the One is both the wealth (kavlaa, the goddess of fortune) and its keeper. Aape raave sabad thaap: having established the world by the Word, the One delights in it. Both giver and gift are the same One.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever noticed that the giver and the gift can point back to the same source?
