O Merciful Lord, Destroyer of demons, Lord of Lakshmi, such is Your Power - Your Shakti. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O Merciful One, Madhusudan who defeats the demons, Madho, Lord of Lakshmi — such is Your power.

Merciful One, all of this is Your power.
The deeper layer

Everything runs on the One's power.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Madhusoodan and Maadho are old names for the Divine from the Krishna stories. Miharvaan means the Merciful One. Guru Nanak gathers these names together. Then he points past all of them to the one thing they share: sakat, the living power that holds everything up.

Think of the lights, the fridge and the phone chargers in your home. They all look different, but one power runs through them all. The verses around this line are all examples of that. Whatever happens, it is that one power at work.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so big or so beautiful that it makes you feel the power behind the whole world?
