Held in the One Gaze

ਪੂੰਜੀ ਮਾਰ ਪਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਮੁਦਗਰ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰੇ ਕੋੁਟਵਾਰੀ ॥
poonjee maar pavai nit mudgar paap karay kotvaaree.
His wealth constantly batters him, and sin acts as the police officer.
ਭਾਵੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਭਾਵੈ ਮੰਦਾ ਜੈਸੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
bhaavai changa bhaavai mandaa jaisee nadar tumHaaree. ||4||
Whether the mortal is good or bad, he is as You look upon him, O Lord. ||4||

In plain words

A person's wealth keeps hitting them like a club, again and again, and wrongdoing walks beside them like a police officer.

Good or bad, each of us is as You look upon us, O One.

Good or bad, we all live inside the One gaze.
The deeper layer

The very things we chase can turn on us, and everyone is held in the One's gaze.

Poonjee means wealth. Here it becomes a club that keeps hitting its owner. And wrongdoing follows a person around like a police officer on patrol.

Then Guru Nanak lands on a humbling truth. Bhaavai changa bhaavai mandaa jaisee nadar tumaaree — good or bad, each person is as You look upon them. Nadar means the One's loving glance. This is not saying nothing we do matters. It is a reminder that everything, even who we are becoming, rests inside a larger seeing. Think of a coach who watches every player on the field at once. Nobody falls outside that gaze.

A Question to Sit With

What feels different when you remember you are always seen, and seen with kindness?
