In Every Home a New Song

ਕੂਜਾ ਬਾਂਗ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਮੁਸਲਾ ਨੀਲ ਰੂਪ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥
koojaa baaNg nivaaj muslaa neel roop banvaaree.
The Muslim devotional pots, calls to prayer, prayers and prayer mats are everywhere; the Lord appears in blue robes.
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮੀਆ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਜੀਆਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
ghar ghar mee-aa sabhnaaN jee-aaN bolee avar tumaaree. ||6||
In each and every home, everyone uses Muslim greetings; your speech has changed, O people. ||6||

In plain words

Water pots for washing before prayer, the call to prayer, prayers and prayer mats are everywhere, and the Gardener of the world appears dressed in blue.

In every home, everyone greets each other the Muslim way. Your speech has changed, O people.

In every language and every custom, it is the same One appearing.
The deeper layer

The outside of the world can change, and the same One stays inside it.

Guru Nanak looks honestly at his world. Muslim ways of praying are now everywhere: the call to prayer, the prayer mats, the water pots for washing before prayer. New greetings pass from house to house. Blue robes are the new fashion.

And yet, even in the blue robes, it is banvaaree who appears. Banvaaree means the Gardener of the world, another name for the One. Think of a school that gets new uniforms. The clothes change, but the students inside them are the same. The tone is not a complaint. It is recognition: the same One wears every dress and answers in every language.

A Question to Sit With

When you hear people praying in a way that is new to you, what would it be like to hear the same One behind it?
