Verse 5 of 9

King One Day, Beggar the Next

ਕਬ ਹੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਕਬ ਮੰਗਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
kab hee raajaa kab manganhaar.
Sometimes he is a king, and sometimes he is a beggar.
ਦੂਖ ਸੂਖ ਬਾਧੌ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
dookh sookh baaDhou sansaar.
The world is bound by pleasure and pain.
ਮਨ ਉਧਰਣ ਕਾ ਸਾਜੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
man uDhran kaa saaj naahi.
The mortal makes no arrangements to save himself.
ਪਾਪ ਬੰਧਨ ਨਿਤ ਪਉਤ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੪॥
paap banDhan nit pa-ut jaahi. ||4||
The bondage of sin continues to hold him. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sometimes a person is a king, and sometimes a beggar.

The world is tied up in pain and pleasure.

They make no plan to set their mind free, and the chains of wrongdoing keep holding them.

Fortunes swing high and low; steady yourself in the One before the storms come.
The deeper layer

Fortunes swing between king and beggar, and a mind that never prepares stays tied up.

Kab hee raajaa kab manganhaar: now a king, now a beggar. Dookh sookh baadhou sansaar: the world is tied to pain and pleasure, swinging like a boat with no anchor. Man udhran kaa saaj naahi: no plan is made to lift and free the mind, and the chains of wrongdoing keep holding on. Set the anchor before the storms come.

A Question to Sit With

What is something steady you can hold onto when good days and hard days keep trading places?
