The One Who Stays Untouched

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਭਰਮਿਆ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi baho bharmi-aa.
He wanders in attachment to Maya.
ਕਿਰਤ ਰੇਖ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਮਿਆ ॥
kirat raykh kar karmi-aa.
He acts in accordance with the karma of his past actions.
ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਆਪਿ ॥
karnaihaar alipat aap.
Only the Creator Himself remains detached.
ਨਹੀ ਲੇਪੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੁੰਨ ਪਾਪਿ ॥੬॥
nahee layp parabh punn paap. ||6||
God is not affected by virtue or vice. ||6||

In plain words

Caught in love of Maya, a person wanders far.

They act along the lines drawn by their past actions.

The Creator alone stays untouched. Good deeds and bad deeds do not stick to the One.

The One who made everything stays free and steady — and holds steadiness for us too.
The deeper layer

The world drifts in attachment and old habits, and the Creator stays free and untouched.

Maa-i-aa mohi baho bharmi-aa: wandering far, caught in attachment. Kirat raykh: the lines drawn by past actions, which we call karma. Against all that motion stands karnaihaar alipat aap: the Creator, untouched. Nahee layp prabh punn paap: neither good nor bad deeds leave a stain on the One. Resting in the One, we can find some of that same steadiness.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to stay calm and steady even when everything around you is moving fast?
