Look How Topsy-Turvy Things Have Become

ਦੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਗਾ ਕਲਿ ਕੋ ਭਾਉ ॥
daykhhu logaa kal ko bhaa-o.
Behold, people! This is how it is in the Dark Age of Kali Yuga.
ਸੁਤਿ ਮੁਕਲਾਈ ਅਪਨੀ ਮਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sut muklaa-ee apnee maa-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The son marries his mother. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Look, people, at the way things go in this dark age!

The son weds his own mother — everything is turned upside down.

People often cling hardest to the very things that keep them tangled.
The deeper layer

In a mixed-up age, the mind clings to the very world it came from.

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line, the center of the shabad. Daykhhu logaa kal ko bhaa-o: look, people, at the way of kal, the dark age. Sut muklaa-ee apnee maa-o: the son weds his own mother. The picture is meant to shock. In Kabir's upside-down riddles it stands for the mind, which is born from Maya, the world's shine, and then holds on to Maya as if it belonged to it. The world is turned upside down.

A Question to Sit With

What is something people hold onto tightly even though it does not help them?
