Let Them Laugh

ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਛੋਡਉ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਹਸੈ ॥
tayree bhagat na chhoda-o ki-aa ko hasai.
I shall not renounce Your devotional worship, O Lord; what does it matter if people laugh at me?
ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saach naam mayrai hirdai vasai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The True Name abides within my heart. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I will not give up my devotion to You. What does it matter if people laugh at me?

The True Name lives inside my heart.

When something true lives in your heart, other people's laughter cannot move you.
The deeper layer

Keep loving the One even when people laugh, because the True Name lives in your heart.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It is a small, brave promise. Tayree bhagat na chhoda-o means I will not give up my love and devotion for You. Ki-aa ko hasai means so what if someone laughs?

Think of a kid who still hugs her dad at the school gate, even when others giggle. She knows who she belongs to.

Saach naam mayrai hirdai vasai means the True Name lives in my heart. When the Naam has made a home inside you, other people's opinions lose their power. This is quiet courage. It comes from knowing where you belong.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love that you would keep doing even if someone teased you about it?
