Sikhism·Raag Basant·Shabad 8
Verse 3 of 5

Soaked in the Name

ਜੈਸੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗਲਤੁ ਰਹੈ ॥
jaisay maa-i-aa mohi paraanee galat rahai.
Just as the mortal remains engrossed in attachment to Maya,
ਤੈਸੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰਵਤ ਰਹੈ ॥੨॥
taisay sant jan raam naam ravat rahai. ||2||
so does the Lord's humble Saint remain absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Just as a person stays wrapped up and lost in the pull of Maya, chasing money and shiny things,

so the humble saints stay soaked in the Naam of the One.

You can be just as absorbed in the One as people are in chasing shiny things.
The deeper layer

The saints are as soaked in the Naam as other people are in chasing things.

Maa-i-aa mohi means the pull of Maya, chasing money and things. Some people are totally wrapped up in it. The sant jan, the humble lovers of the One, are wrapped up in the Naam in the very same way.

So loving the One is not hard, grim work. It is the most natural thing in the world. Think of how a child gets lost in a favorite game and forgets to come for dinner. We all get taken up by what we love.

The verse leaves one gentle question: what are you soaked in?

A Question to Sit With

What is something you get so absorbed in that you lose track of time?
