Raag Bhairao
Commentary

Raag Bhairao, Shabad, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan Dev)

"There is no deity like the true teacher; no gap between the One and the Guru."

The Arc

A hymn of praise to the Satguru: independent, adorned with truth, giver to all, strength of the powerless, home of the homeless. It closes by searching the old scriptures and finding no difference at all between the Supreme One and the Guru who points to it.

Key Vocabulary

  • Baymuhtaaj — utterly independent, needing nothing.
  • Taan nitaan — the power of the powerless.
  • Bidhaataa — the shaper of what unfolds.
  • Seva — selfless service; introduced for young readers.

Themes and Cross-Connections

"Strength for the weak" and "home for the homeless" carry the tradition's lifting of the overlooked, echoed in B00C2400 and B00C2403.

Translation Notes

The Simritees and Vedas are named respectfully; the point is unity of all deep teaching, not dismissal. Maar jeevaalai ("kills and revives") is rendered as turning the worn-out around and breathing new life in, to keep death imagery gentle.

For Raag Bhairao

Praise in a bright, strong raag; the intensity is devotion, the fierce gratitude of one who was shown the path.
