Everyone Can Doze Off

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
bhairo mehlaa 3.
Bhairao, Third Mehl:
ਜੋਗੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥
jogee garihee pandit bhaykh-Dhaaree.
The Yogis, the householders, the Pandits, the religious scholars, and the beggars in religious robes
ਏ ਸੂਤੇ ਅਪਣੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
ay sootay apnai ahaNkaaree. ||1||
- they are all asleep in egotism. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Yogis, householders, scholars, and people who wear holy robes —

all of them are fast asleep in their own ego.

Any of us — in any role — can be lulled asleep by our own pride.
The deeper layer

Ego can put anyone to sleep, whatever path they walk.

Jogee garihee pandit bhaykh-dhaaree: yogis who leave home to meditate, householders who raise families, pandits who study the scriptures, and people who wear holy robes. Ay sootay apnai ahankaaree: all of them are asleep in their own ahankaar, ego. Every path is named together; ego is the sleep, and no tradition is singled out.

A Question to Sit With

What's something that can make even smart, good people stop paying attention?
