Only those who remain awake and aware are not robbed. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
They stay fast asleep, dizzy with the wine of Maya, the shine of the world.
Whoever stays awake and aware is not robbed.
Staying awake and aware is its own protection against losing what matters.
Dizzy with the shine of the world, you drift asleep; stay awake, and no one can rob you.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Maa-i-aa mad maataa rahi-aa so-ay: drunk on the wine of Maya, the pull of money, things and show, a person stays asleep. Jaagat rahai na moosai ko-ay: whoever stays awake is not robbed. Think of a house where someone is awake and the lights are on; thieves pass it by. Jaagai, "stays awake", comes back in every verse that follows.
