The Tree Beside Sandalwood Turns Fragrant

ਚੰਦਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਬਿਗਰਿਓ ॥
chandan kai sang tarvar bigri-o.
Associating with the sandalwood tree, the tree nearby is changed;
ਸੋ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬਰਿਓ ॥੨॥
so tarvar chandan ho-ay nibri-o. ||2||
that tree begins to smell just like the sandalwood tree. ||2||

In plain words

A tree that grows beside the sandalwood tree is changed.

That tree begins to smell like sandalwood too.

Spend time near sweetness, and you slowly grow sweet yourself.
The deeper layer

A tree that grows beside sandalwood begins to smell like sandalwood.

Chandan is sandalwood, a tree loved for its sweet smell. Tarvar is any ordinary tree. When the ordinary tree grows beside the sandalwood, it is bigri-o, changed. It chandan ho-ay nibri-o, becomes sandalwood too.

It is an everyday version of the river picture. Think of how a sweater picks up the smell of the kitchen after a day of cooking. You didn't try to make it smell good. It just happened by being close. Goodness rubs off on you like that, slowly and naturally.

A Question to Sit With

Who in your life makes you kinder or calmer just by being around them?
