In plain words

When ordinary copper touches the paaras, the magic stone, it is changed.

That copper turns into gold.

Contact with the Source changes you all the way through.
The deeper layer

Copper that touches the paaras stone turns into gold.

Paaras is a magic stone from old Indian stories. Any metal that touches it turns to gold. Taabaa, copper, touches it and kanchan ho-ay nibri-o, becomes gold.

Now Kabir has given three pictures: the river, the sandalwood and the paaras. Each one is stronger than the last. A stream joins a river. A tree picks up a smell. And now a metal changes all the way through. Think of the difference between painting a rock gold and the rock turning to gold all the way through. Closeness to the One changes what you are made of.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between looking better on the outside and changing inside?
