Rich and Poor, Both Brothers

ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਸਰਧਨੁ ਦੋਨਉ ਭਾਈ ॥

The poor man and the rich man are both brothers.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਕਲਾ ਨ ਮੇਟੀ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
parabh kee kalaa na maytee jaa-ee. ||3||
God's pre-ordained plan cannot be erased. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The poor person and the rich person are both brothers.

What the One has set in motion cannot be erased.

Rich and poor are brothers first — the difference in money doesn't rank the person.
The deeper layer

Rich and poor are family to each other, equal in worth.

Nirdhan sardhan don-o bhaa-ee: poor and rich are both brothers. Prabh kee kalaa na maytee jaa-ee: the One's power and play cannot be wiped away. Beneath the difference in money they are family. The circumstances differ, and the shared humanity stays the same.

A Question to Sit With

If everyone is family underneath, how should that change the way we treat people who have less?
