Verse 2 of 5

It All Moves by One Flow

ਰੇ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਸਿਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥
ray jan kai si-o karahu pukaaraa.
O mortal, unto whom will you complain?
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹੋਆ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hukmay ho-aa hukmay vartaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Hukam of the Lord's Command is pervasive; by the Hukam of His Command, all things happen. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O friend, who will you complain to?

Everything comes to be in the flow of life, and everything happens in the flow of life.

Everything moves by one great flow — the way existence works.
The deeper layer

Everything happens in the flow of life, so there is no one else to complain to.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Ray jan kai si-o karahu pukaaraa: O friend, to whom will you complain? Hukmay ho-aa hukmay vartaaraa: by Hukam, the flow of existence, everything came to be, and by Hukam everything goes on. This is trust, and it leaves your own part in place: you still do your share, and you stop fighting the river you are swimming in.

A Question to Sit With

When something's out of your control, does it help to remember it's part of something bigger?
