He alone is a Mullah, a teacher of faith, who wrestles with his own mind,
and, through the Guru's teaching, stands up to death.
He crushes the pride of death itself.
To that Mullah I always offer my greetings of respect.
The bravest fight is the one with your own mind, and it is what makes a Mullah worthy of the name.
Kabir honors a Muslim religious title from the inside out. So mulaa jo man si-o larai: the Mullah is the one who battles his own mind. Gur updays kaal si-o jurai: through the Guru's teaching he faces death. Kaal purakh kaa mardai maan: he breaks the pride of death, so its fear no longer rules him. The honor goes to inner courage, more than to a robe or a title. Tis mulaa ka-o sadaa salaam: to such a Mullah, always greetings. The hymn goes on to honor each title by the virtue inside it.
What's harder to master: someone else, or your own reactions when you're upset?
