Verse 5 of 5

Turn From Duality, Rest in the One

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਹਉ ਕਹਉ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ॥
kahat kabeer ha-o kaha-o pukaar.
Says Kabir, I proclaim this out loud
ਸਮਝਿ ਦੇਖੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥
samajh daykh saakat gaavaar.
- behold, and understand, you ignorant, faithless cynic.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਘਰ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay bahut ghar gaalay.
The love of duality has ruined countless homes.
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤ ਹੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਾਲੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੨॥
raam bhagat hai sadaa sukhaalay. ||4||4||12||
The Lord's devotees are forever in bliss. ||4||4||12||

In plain words

Kabir says: I call this out loud.

Look, and understand, you stubborn one who has turned away from the One.

Loving other things in place of the One has ruined so many homes.

The One's devotees are always at peace.

Turn from a scattered heart toward the living One, and you find a lasting peace.
The deeper layer

A heart split between many loves ruins homes, and those who love the One are always at peace.

The close. Kahat kabeer ha-o kaha-o pukaar: says Kabir, I call out loud. The shabad sits under the heading Mehl 5, Guru Arjan, and still carries Kabir's name here, spoken in Kabir's voice among Kabir's hymns. Samajh daykh saakat gaavaar: look and understand, you saakat, one turned away from the One. Doojai bhaa-ay bahut ghar gaalay: the love of duality, of something other than the One, has hollowed out countless homes. Raam bhagat hai sadaa sukhaalay: the One's lovers are ever in peace. Under the sharp words is an earnest, loving call: turn from a scattered heart toward the living One and rest.

A Question to Sit With

When your attention is pulled in a hundred directions, how does it feel compared to when it's settled on one thing you love?
