ਐਸਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬਿਚਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥
aisaa gi-aan bichaar manaa.
Contemplate such spiritual wisdom, O mortal man.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਨ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har kee na simrahu dukh bhanjnaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Why not meditate in remembrance on the Lord, the Destroyer of pain? ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O my mind, think deeply on wisdom like this.
Why not remember the One, who breaks pain apart?
Remembering the One can quietly loosen pain's grip.
Think this wisdom over, and remember the One who takes pain away.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad; the other verses grow out of it. Aisaa gi-aan bichaar manaa: O mind, reflect on such understanding. Har kee na simrahu dukh bhanjnaa: why not remember the One, the dukh bhanjan, the breaker of pain? The question is an invitation. Remembrance, simran, eases the heart.
A Question to Sit With
What is a thought you can return to that eases you when you are hurting?
