Verse 3 of 5

Hoping For Elsewhere Keeps You From Here

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਮਨ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਕੀ ਆਸ ॥
jab lag man baikunth kee aas.
As long as the mortal hopes for heaven,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਰਨ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥੨॥
tab lag naahee charan nivaas. ||2||
he will not dwell at the Lord's Feet. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

As long as the mind keeps hoping for heaven,

it does not live at the feet of the One.

Chasing "someday, somewhere" can make you miss what is here now.
The deeper layer

Reaching for a heaven far away can make us miss what is right here.

jab lag man baikunth kee aas — as long as the mind hopes for heaven, tab lag naahee charan nivaas — it will not live at the Feet of the One. The Feet mean being near the One.

Think of a kid on a car trip who asks "Are we there yet?" the whole way. They miss every mountain and river out the window. The turn is gentle: stop straining toward there, so you can arrive here.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing right in front of you might you be overlooking?
