Talking Of Heaven Without Knowing Yourself

ਆਪ ਆਪ ਕਾ ਮਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾਂ ॥
aap aap kaa maram na jaanaaN.
One who does not even know the mystery of his own self,
ਬਾਤਨ ਹੀ ਬੈਕੁੰਠੁ ਬਖਾਨਾਂ ॥੧॥
baatan hee baikunth bakhaanaaN. ||1||
speaks of heaven, but it is only talk. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone who does not even know the secret of their own self

talks about heaven, but it is only talk.

It is hard to find a faraway heaven while a whole world inside you goes unexplored.
The deeper layer

The journey to heaven starts inside, with knowing yourself.

Some people have never looked into the maram, the secret, of their own self. Yet they talk and talk about heaven. Kabir calls that baatan hee, just talk.

Think of someone describing a city they have only seen in pictures. It sounds nice, but it is only talk. Knowing yourself comes first.

A Question to Sit With

What is something about your own heart you would like to understand better?
